Cosmetic Dentistry

Of all the changes in dentistry in the last 30 years, perhaps the greatest change has occurred in Cosmetic Dentistry. There are so many procedures, materials and treatments available to the Dentist that never existed before.

We often advise patients to book a COSMETIC SERVICES at our office. If you are a bit confused about what you can do to improve your smile, you will walk out with a clear idea of the different options and an estimated cost to do so.

It is important to remember that Cosmetic Dentistry is not an accredited specialty. Any dentist can call himself or herself a Cosmetic Dentist. Yes some dentists have taken extra courses and instruction or studied this field in depth. The Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario issues no specialty certificates for Cosmetic Dentists.

Listed below are examples of some accredited dental specialties. These usually require 2 to 3 years of schooling after dental school. The Royal College does issue specialty certificates for these.

Periodontist – Gum specialist

Prosthodontist – Specializes in replacing/ restoring lost teeth, usually where multiple teeth are involved.

Endodontist – Specializes in performing Root Canal therapy

Oral Surgeons

Orthodontists – Specializes in correcting malpositioned teeth or bony structures

If you don’t like the look of your teeth, it is important first to determine what you could do to improve their appearance. Is it your gums, or your teeth? Is it the shapes of your teeth, their position, their color, their spacing. Once this has been studied, then different treatments can be recommended to improve your smile. This first consult appointment where an accurate diagnosis and where different treatment options are discussed is the first step to improving your smile.
