Oral Cancer

Along with disorders of your teeth and gums, it is also important to check for signs of oral cancers. Although the incidence of this is very low in our part of the world, it is important to have a regular check done for any disorders/ pathologies of the mouth.

We perform a soft tissue exam at each one of your check-up appointments. If you notice anything abnormal between your dental check-up visits, please notify us.

Common symptoms of Oral cancer include:

• Visible red or white spots anywhere in the mouth and lips. In the early stages, these white and red patches are the warning signs of abnormal cells being accumulated in the mouth. If not treated on time, they can become cancerous.
• A sore or blister in your mouth that bleeds easily or does not heal. If you see a sore lasting for over a week or 2, then it is the time you consult a doctor.
• Constant pain, bleeding from the mouth can be a cause for cancer.
• Difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking or moving the jaw or tongue

Risk factors of Oral Cancer:

Some of the risk factors are listed below:

• If you have a family history of oral cancer or any other kind of cancer, then you have a greater risk of it.
• Excessive use of tobacco products such as cigarettes and alcohol increases the risk of oral cancer to a great extent.
• Excessive exposure to the sun at a very young age. The risk increases if you have a very sensitive skin.
